Running Rebels is an organization dedicated to guiding Milwaukee youth into adulthood through mentoring, positive programming, and community connections. Celebrating 44 years of service, the group engages with 2,500 youth annually and works diligently to prevent involvement in gangs, drugs, violence, and the juvenile justice system. The organization offers a variety of programs, including 24/7 mentoring and access to arts, athletic, and academic initiatives.
Youth Mentoring Programs
Running Rebels provides comprehensive mentoring programs, available 24/7, aimed at supporting adjudicated and court-ordered youth. Their initiatives include a Community Mentoring Program for youth aged 12-17 with no juvenile justice involvement. Additionally, they offer Crisis Stabilization and Mentoring programs for individuals referred through Wraparound Milwaukee or Milwaukee County. The organization emphasizes positive youth development through connections with role models and mentors.
Academic and Leadership Programs
The Higher Education Learning Program (HELP) is one of Running Rebels' flagship academic initiatives, designed to make college attainable for Milwaukee youth. It also provides annual scholarships. The organization offers an African American male leadership program focusing on literacy and cultural awareness. For young ladies, there is a leadership program that provides connections with positive female role models. These programs aim to foster leadership skills and cultural awareness among participants.
Arts and Entertainment Programs
Running Rebels offers a variety of audio/visual entertainment programs, including photography, videography, songwriting, rapping, and stage presence. Their visual arts programs encompass drawing, painting, and making collages. These creative programs are tailored to help youth express themselves and develop their artistic skills while staying engaged in positive activities.
Sports and Athletic Programs
The athletic programs run by Running Rebels teach youth important values such as discipline, teamwork, and dedication. These activities include basketball fundamentals, athletic training, and other sports, all offered for free. The programs aim to inculcate a sense of teamwork and discipline both on and off the court, providing a structured, supportive environment for young athletes.
Community and School-Based Programs
Running Rebels operates the Violence-Free Zone, a school-based mentoring program active in seven Milwaukee Public Schools. This initiative focuses on maintaining a safe, supportive environment for students. Additionally, the Pipeline2Promise program establishes partnerships with businesses to ensure youth employment, helping bridge the gap between education and professional opportunities.
