Sakuu

Sakuu, founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Jose, California, specializes in innovative battery manufacturing technologies, including the Kavian platform for 3D printing batteries.

Company History

Sakuu was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in San Jose, California. Since its inception, the company has made significant strides in the battery manufacturing industry, including being the first to 3D print fully functional batteries with custom shapes and sizes. Sakuu continues to innovate and expand, with plans to break ground on two Gigawatt factories in 2023.

Kavian Platform

Sakuu has developed the Kavian platform, a first-of-its-kind production scale platform designed for printing batteries. This platform is capable of printing ceramic, glass, metals, and polymer in the same layer. Notably, the Kavian platform reduces the overall size of a battery factory by 44%, lowers CapEx costs by 23%, reduces the number of process steps by 69%, and cuts down overall manufacturing costs by 33%. Additionally, it uses 44% less factory space and is engineered to recycle and reuse all excess materials, significantly reducing the carbon footprint by up to 50%.

Innovative Battery Technologies

Sakuu has developed various advanced battery technologies, including the Cypress™ lithium metal cell chemistry. This technology offers high power ratings of 8C peak, 10C pulse, and 3C continuous discharge, 1000 cycles at 100% depth of discharge, and an energy density of over 800 Wh/l. These batteries are designed to be safe, non-flammable, and can be custom-shaped for different industry needs. Sakuu's 3Ah lithium-metal, 30 sub-cell solid-state battery is an example of its innovative approach.

Products and Services

Sakuu operates a pilot facility that processes pre-existing client battery orders and has the capability to produce up to 2.5 MWh per year of solid-state batteries. Their proprietary battery structure allows for ultra-high energy density and safety. Sakuu offers products that can be used across a wide range of industries, including custom-shaped batteries to fit specific needs. The company's products and services are compatible with both current and future chemistries used on factory floors.

Collaborations and Partnerships

Sakuu collaborates with various industry partners to enhance its technological capabilities. One notable partnership is with Livent Corporation, utilizing Livent’s proprietary LIOVIX® printable lithium formulation in its battery 3D printing process. Such collaborations are key to Sakuu's innovative approach in the battery manufacturing sector. The company has also opened a new battery printing and engineering facility in Silicon Valley, further broadening its operational scope.
