Over the years, SAYA has expanded its reach to serve a diverse population that includes first- and second-generation immigrant youth of color from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. The organization has grown substantially, now offering its programs in multiple neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn.
Programs and Services
SAYA provides a wide range of year-round programming at no cost to underserved youth in New York City. The programs span several areas, including sports, arts, and STEM activities. Some of these activities include visual arts, dance, basketball, volleyball, yoga, meditation, coding, robotics, and architectural modeling. Beyond extracurriculars, SAYA also offers essential services like homework help for elementary and middle school kids, personalized tutoring, and free SAT preparation for high school students. Additionally, the organization offers college advisement and organized trips to various colleges, both public and private.
Career Exploration and Professional Development
SAYA assists high school and college youth by offering career exploration opportunities that help them understand various professional paths and origin stories. The organization provides networking mixers with professionals and partners with corporate sponsors to offer internships, externships, and company visits. These efforts aim to give the youth hands-on exposure to different career fields and professional environments.
Leadership and Identity Development
SAYA places a significant emphasis on leadership and identity development, particularly targeting high school students. Programs focus on personal and social identity cultivation and include activities around mental and physical well-being. High school young women and men benefit from mentorship that guides them in navigating their formative years and shaping their future aspirations.
College Success Program
The College Success Program at SAYA provides comprehensive support to students throughout their college years. Since 2015, the organization has awarded over $1.4 million in scholarship funds to 144 youth as part of this program. The initiative includes academic and personal guidance, professional development opportunities, and career readiness training. This holistic approach aims to ensure that students not only access higher education but also succeed and thrive throughout their academic journey.
