Founders

Traditional Medicinals was founded in 1974 by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar and community activist Drake Sadler. They aimed to create a line of herbal products that offered wellness benefits. The company was one of the first U.S. manufacturers to market organically and domestically grown herbal products.

Sustainability Initiatives

Traditional Medicinals is committed to sustainability, offering the first BPI-certified, 100% compostable tea wrapper. In 2023, the company invested $174,245 in fair premiums for sourcing communities and maintained over 99% volume of organic herbs. Their projects supported over 6,800 people in Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Philippines, and Egypt. They diverted over 88% of operational waste from landfills and used 100% local renewable electricity at their Sebastopol production facility. Additionally, they purchased 2,013 metric tons of carbon offsets.

Certifications and Awards

Traditional Medicinals is a Certified B Corp and California Benefit Corporation. They were among the first natural products companies to receive a B Corp certification in 2010. In 2023, they were named 'Best Places to Work' by the North Bay Business Journal for the 6th year in a row. That year, 61% of the company leaders identified as female and the company employed 226 full-time employees.
