History of UIC Alaska
UIC Alaska was officially incorporated on April 19, 1973. The company's first major business venture was the purchase of Shontz Store in 1974, which was later renamed Stuaqpak. In 1978, UIC established its first wholly-owned subsidiary, UIC Construction. Over the years, the company has expanded its operations significantly, including the creation of Umialik Insurance Company in 1981 and Bowhead Transportation Company in 1982. In 1992, UIC dedicated 7,400 acres in Barrow to scientific research, known as the Barrow Environmental Observatory. The company has continually grown, taking advantage of opportunities such as the Small Business Administration’s '8(a)' program in 2000.
